This square pattern is reverse engineered from [link] "The quilt pattern is Twist and Shout by Nancy Mahoney." I made no money off this project. It is for a friend's personal use only.
A friend wanted a series of 'fools motley' costume pieces for a performance. But she didn't want to look too silly, and there were important theatrical elements to consider. We eventually designed to the idea of a overskirt of dags, a fully reversible capelet of motley and somber black, and the iconic multi-tipped floppy hat. We designed to the use of blacks; to contrast the stark white underskirt, to tie the motley into the rest of her outfit and other's costumes - but also to add a flippant little bit of formality and the implications of church stained glass.
Eventually all 3 pieces took about about 120 squares. There are 31 colors culled from several fabric stashes and then augmented with fat quarters to complete the spectrum, and 2 blacks just for randomness. While we were very careful to keep track of the color progression, we didn't keep track of which side of the square got which black. A fool's motley has to have SOME true randomness in it, after all.
When I get a portrait of my friend in the finished pieces, I'll post those. These pictures were just quick snapshots I took to keep myself going. The stack of squares looks so, so very teeny tiny. I had to prove to myself it really did lay out to a large space.
